Upon research, you may have found that crawl space vapor barriers come in a wide range of sizes to fit the needs of your crawl space. It wouldn’t take much research to find that there’s a lot of them to go through.
Crawl space vapor barriers come in a wide range of different sizes, such as;
• 4 Mil
• 6 Mil
• 8 Mil
• 10 Mil
• 12 Mil
• 20 Mil
What Crawl Space Vapor Barrier Size Do I Need?
So you’re trying to find what crawl space vapor barrier size you need for your encapsulation project. Where do you start? What vapor barrier size do you need to use?
If you have a big crawl space that will have storage and traffic, you may want to go with a 20 mil crawl space vapor barrier. The 20 mil size is also great for crawl space floors that have rocks, tough soil or concrete down. The 20 mil vapor barrier is one of the most common sizes used.
The 12 mil vapor barrier is used for medium sized crawl spaces and often used on the crawl space foundation. These vapors can withstand medium traffic and storage. Use this on the crawl space floor if you have small rocks to contend with. The 12 mil is the top vapor barrier size used.
10 Mil Crawl Space Vapor Barrier
The 10 mil crawl space liner is used on small crawl spaces. You can store very light weight things and foot traffic should be little to none. Ok for the walls, ok for some crawl space floors.
The 8 mil crawl space vapor barrier is also used on small crawl spaces. Crawl space floors should be soft dirt, nothing on the floor.
The 6 mil crawl space liner is used in small crawl spaces, often referred to as the “economy” vapor barrier. You can’t have storage on this vapor barrier. If you need to store on the vapor barrier, you may want to consider a larger size.
